Screws vs. Plugs: Which Fastener is Best for Installing Vinyl Shutters?

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Most vinyl shutters come with two types of fasteners: Screws & Shutter Plugs. Why two? Many people ask what is the difference and why would one be used over another. Here is the simple answer:

Shutter plugs are best for managing expansion & contraction

Shutter plugs (also known as shutter spikes or shutter locks) are typically made of plastic and are designed specifically for attaching shutters. They require a pre-drilled hole, and the heads of the plugs are color-matched to the shutters, so they deliver a finished look.

Two reasons shutter plugs are preferred installation method for most applications:

  1. Expansion & Contraction. Vinyl shutters are made out of plastic and expand and contract with temperature changes. A shutter plug is more flexible than a screw, allowing the shutter to grow or shrink rather than buckle.

  2. Installing in Brick. Shutter plugs are the best way to install a shutter into a brick wall. Simply drill a hole into the mortar joint and use a shutter plug. Wall anchors are required if using screws on masonry or brick.

Screws are easier to install

Screws are the second fastener type typically included with shutters. The screws either have caps or painted heads (picture above has color-matched caps).

Sometimes screws are a better option than shutter plugs:

  1. Some Board & Batten shutters have a hidden fastener system, with expansion slots made for screws. Screws are the best installation method in this application. They are fast and allow for all expansion and contraction.

  2. Location with difficult access. Screws are easier to install and remove there are some applications where you may decide screws are the best fit.

"When it comes to planning your shutter installation, start with plugs. If you run into an issue use screws." – George Ivezaj, Straightline Contracting, LLC

Overall, both shutter plugs and screws can be effective for attaching vinyl shutters, but it ultimately depends on your personal preferences and the specific needs of your home. Summary: Shutter plugs are the best for managing expansion and contraction. Screws are the easiest for installation. Both are great options for fastening shutters.
